49: The Harsh Truth About Obesity And Oppression
Apr 06, 2023 Episode 49
Andrew Briggs

Obesity is a growing problem in many parts of the world, with millions of people struggling to maintain a healthy weight. While obesity can lead to serious health problems such as heart disease, stroke, and diabetes, those who suffer from obesity often face discrimination and oppression in their daily lives.

One of the most common claims of oppression from those who are obese is that they are discriminated against in the workplace. Studies have shown that obese individuals are less likely to be hired for certain jobs, and are often paid less than their non-obese counterparts. In addition, they may be passed over for promotions or be given less challenging tasks than their colleagues.

Obese individuals also face oppression in the healthcare system. Many doctors and healthcare professionals hold negative attitudes towards obesity, which can result in inadequate treatment or a lack of empathy for their patients. Obese individuals may also be subject to weight-based stigma from healthcare providers, which can discourage them from seeking medical care.

The media and entertainment industries also play a role in perpetuating oppression towards those who are obese. Advertisements and popular culture often depict overweight individuals as lazy, gluttonous, and lacking in self-control, perpetuating negative stereotypes and discrimination.

Finally, obese individuals may face oppression in their personal lives as well. They may be subject to verbal harassment or physical violence, and may find it difficult to find romantic partners or form meaningful relationships due to weight-based stigma.

Overall, those who suffer from obesity often feel oppressed and discriminated against in a variety of ways. While there are certainly health risks associated with obesity, it is important to address the social and systemic factors that contribute to oppression towards overweight individuals. By promoting body positivity and combating weight-based discrimination, we can work towards a more inclusive and equitable society for all.

But I'm going to do my best to cover all of these.
